Gig Rowing

Our current project, begun in Spring 2021, is to raise sufficient funds to purchase a traditional East Coast Gig. We plan to introduce a new section to the club aimed at increasing access to the beautiful River Orwell in a stable and comfortable traditional rowing boat. The design of the Harker’s Yard Gig is based on the traditional 19th century working pilot boat found along the East coast and common around the Orwell and Stour estuaries.

If you enjoy the social and recreational aspects of a team-based activity as well as the links to the past and the traditions of the Suffolk coast, becoming part of our future gig community may be just what you need after the restrictions of the COVID19 pandemic. Quietly paddling into the shallows of the remote shorelines of the Orwell are an ideal way of getting closer to nature in an unobtrusive manner, while improving your health and fitness.

We shall make regular updates on this page on the progress of fund raising to buy this new boat and as to when options are available to get out on the Orwell in a coastal gig.
